As many of you recall, last year The Rachel’s Challenge was held here at WHS for all students, parents and Weymouth community members. The family of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine Massacre, created this program to “prevent other Columbines…..and to start a chain reaction of hope”. The program’s mission to “motivate, educate and bring positive change to many young people” is broken down into TWO parts: Rachel’s Challenge and Rachel’s Legacy.
In Rachel’s Challenge (year one), students are guided to discover that they can affect the world around them in significant ways. We were all asked to commit to the challenge of eliminating prejudice, daring to dream, choosing our influence, using kind works, showing acts of kindness and starting a chain reaction with family and friends. Interested students joined the “Friends of Rachel Scott” group and 100 selected students were trained in spreading Rachel’s message and preventing/identifying bullying in schools. Rachel’s Legacy (year two), picks up right where the challenge leaves off, focusing on uncovering the potential and significance found in everyone. Students are challenged to open their minds and see just how great an impact one person can make in the world. Similar to Rachel’s Challenge, Rachel’s Legacy will incorporate more stories from Rachel’s life.
We look forward to continuing Rachel’s message.
