The Cosmetology program is designed to provide students with the ability to meet the requirements of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Board of Cosmetology written and practical licensure exams. They must complete 1,000 hours of practical and written study after the age of sixteen, regulations set by state. Studies include facial, make up, massage therapy, manicures, scalp treatments, roller sets, fingerwaves, pincurls, cuts, blow drying, curling iron techniques, and various chemical procedures such as coloring, foils, permanent waves, chemical relaxers. Basic knowledge in chemistry, anatomy, electricity and light therapy are covered. Portfolio notebooks and electronic portfolios are developed throughout course. Mock practical and written exams are required at mid year and final exams. Students must maintain a 73 average to continue course sequence.
Upon graduation, students are prepared to enter the job market after obtaining their license. Countless career opportunities exist in all areas of cosmetology: for example- cosmetologist, salon owner (after two years of documented full time experience), theatrical makeup design, platform artist, educator or stylists for such companies Clairol, Redkin, Paul Mitchell, etc.
Second semester freshmen and Cosmetology 1 students work on manikins to obtain experience and in addition Cosmetology 2 & 3 students work in the school salon with clients from the community. Students are encouraged to further their education in college for business degrees or advanced schools for specialized Cosmetology areas.
